Autonomous e-Mobility Forum kicks off in Qatar

Transport Minister H.E. Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti officially launched the Autonomous e-Mobility Forum as of 30th April, 2024.

Taking place over three days at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC), the Forum is hosted by the Ministry of Transport and organised by Just us & Otto Marketing Services, in collaboration with InStrat, a Department of 4th Dimension.

Driving the forum is the need for a platform in which to discuss and exchange ideas towards implementing autonomous e-Mobility in a real world setting.

The opening ceremony was attended by various ministers, prominent state officials, and chairpersons working within the transportation sector.

In his address, Minister Al-Sulaiti emphasised Qatar’s commitment, under the wise leadership of H.H. the Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to continue developing a coherent, sustainable, integrated, and eco-friendly transportation system. He highlighted Qatar’s leading position in green and smart transportation and its willingness to share expertise with the world, drawing on its real-life experiences hosting major continental and international events where transportation plays a crucial role.

The minister underscored the successful provision of safe and seamless mobility during the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023, where nearly 3.4 million fans transported by buses and about 6.5 million using the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram. He also mentioned the transportation of around 18.2 million people by the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram and over 7 million passengers by public buses during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Regarding public bus electrification, the minister noted that Qatar has achieved 73% electrification in Q1 of 2024, with plans to reach 100% electric public bus fleet by 2030, positioning Qatar among the top countries worldwide in zero-emission transportation transition, aligning with the Qatar National Environment and Climate Change Strategy, approved in September 2021, which reflects the country’s long-term sustainability ambitions and an urgent need to respond to the climate crisis.

As part of the plan, Qatar has made investments in green public transportation and infrastructure projects as part of the ambition to provide eco-friendly and safe transport services.

During the opening address, Minister Al-Sulaiti also announced the upcoming establishment of a specialised centre for inspecting and testing Electric Vehicles (EVs) to ensure compliance with Qatar’s standards and certifications.

In support of innovation and global advancements in transportation, Minister Al-Sulaiti outlined efforts towards achieving the goals of the 3rd Qatar National Development Strategy, focusing on technology harnessing, sustainable development, and economic diversification, in alignment with the vision of the wise leadership and the pillars of the QNV2030. He highlighted ongoing efforts related to the Autonomous Vehicle Strategy, facilitating autonomous vehicles’ operations and ensuring safety through an AV fleet operations centre.

Concluding his remarks, Minister Al-Sulaiti reiterated the commitment to enhancing the transportation system, promoting investment, supporting other industries, and leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.

The minister then inaugurated and toured the accompanying exhibition with fellow ministers and officials, where they were briefed on the latest technology trends and innovations in driverless and e-mobility.

Minister Al-Sulaiti also joined other ministers in experiencing a real-life journey aboard an autonomous e-bus, equipped with sensors, high-definition cameras, laser sensors, and ultrasonic radar for maximum safety and security.

Day 1 of the Forum featured several panel discussions on topics including smart city design, accelerating innovation in autonomous mobility, and balancing mobility, energy, and the environment, along with the introduction of eco-friendly trucks in Qatar.
