Report: EE top 5G provider in London but the capital still trails European cities

MedUX has unveiled a first-of-its-kind report on 5G performance in London. This in-depth analysis places EE at the forefront in terms of 5G reliability and overall Quality of Experience (QoE) in London, scoring an impressive 4.61 out of 5.

The study, which utilised a comprehensive methodology involving 88,311 radio samples and 11,833 tests conducted in the third quarter of 2023, meticulously assessed the 5G services of Three, EE, O2, and Vodafone. Key aspects such as availability, accessibility, speed, streaming, data, and OTT (over-the-top) experiences were evaluated to compile the 5G QoE Benchmarking Report for London.

Key findings of the London 5G report

EE’s Superior 5G Performance: EE emerged as a leader in 5G service, registering the highest 5G registration rate (92% of the time) and demonstrating the most consistent experience (99.6% service reliability). The operator excelled in accessibility, web navigation, gaming, and video streaming, providing users with rapid video content loading, swift social media and OTT services, and high download speeds reaching up to 800 Mbps.

Performance Highlights of Other Operators: Vodafone achieved the highest 5G download speed with an 87% speed score, while Three led in upstream link (UL) speeds, peaking at 157 Mbps. O2 was noted for its reliable DNS resolution service, sharing a 92% DNS score with Three.

London’s position in the European context

Despite EE’s strong performance, a broader European-level report by MedUX, set to be released in early February, places London as one of the lower-ranking cities in terms of overall 5G experience compared to other European cities. This underscores the need for improvements in the UK’s 5G infrastructure.

European 5G experience

Berlin: Praised for offering the best 5G experience among European cities.
Milan: Recognised for having the most reliable networks (99.9% service reliability).
Porto: Noted for the widest 5G availability (91% registration rate).

Rafael González, CMO at MedUX, stressed the importance of this analysis for UK network operators to benchmark against their European counterparts. He noted that while UK networks perform adequately, a noticeable gap exists with other European regions. However, he suggested that actionable steps could be taken to enhance 5G deployment across the UK.

“This report provides vital insights into London’s 5G landscape, a key indicator for the rest of the UK. As we move into 2024, we look forward to seeing how operators use our data to continually elevate service quality and digital experiences for their customers,” González added.
